Reiki is a form of energy healing where energy is channelled through the hands to the recipient. Reiki works on both a physical and emotional level and can help people in many different ways.
History of Reiki
There are differing accounts of the true origins of Reiki but the main theme of the story is that a Japanese Doctor, Dr.Mikao Usui, re-discovered this technique after spending a long time in a meditation retreat. He has been portrayed as a both a Buddhist monk and a Christian. Some claim that Reiki originally comes from Buddhist Tantric Teachings and that is what Dr.Usui was studying in the retreat. The original teachings of Dr.Usui are more than likely not exactly the same as the teachings given today as they have been watered down and added too as they have passed from master to student. But the principles of Reiki are still the same.
The most common form of Reiki is the Usui System mentioned above but there are many forms including Seichem or Egyptian Reiki and Tibetan Reiki. There are also many different forms on energy healing, so if Reiki doesn't strike a chord with you then you could look into other energy based practices such as Qi Gong or Tai Chi.
Every Reiki Master has a slightly different way of doing things so it is very important to find the right Master before embarking on any Reiki course. Follow your intuition and you will be guided to the right one
There are 3 levels to Reiki training:-
Reiki 1- The student is given the first attunements and learns to do Reiki on themselves and others but is not allowed to practice professionally.
Reiki 2- The student is given further attunements and given the Reiki Symbols. The symbols are used for distance healing and to further empower the student. Once a student has been attuned to Reiki 2 level they are able to practice professionally.
Reiki 3/Master Level- Normally anyone wishing to train to Master level must have been practicing for more than 3 years but there are people offering Reiki training as a whole package so it is up to the prospective student to do their research and find a master who they believe in. The Master level consists of further attunements and attainment of the Master Symbol. Once a student has been attuned to Master level they are able to attune others to Reiki.
The idea that you can become a Reiki Master, or even a Reiki therapist in a weekend is really not the way to approach Reiki. Once you have been attuned to Reiki it is a gradual process of healing yourself that occurs first. If you do not heal yourself you will not be able to heal others effectively, even though it is not really you who is doing the healing, the Reiki needs a clear channel to pass through.
Treatment and Practice
A Reiki treatment consists of a series of hand positions being followed usually starting from the head downwards ensuring the whole body is covered. Physical touch is not always required as the hands can be held a few inches away from the body, this method can actually sometimes be more effective than the hands on approach as rather than connecting with the physical body the therapist connects to the subtle energy body. A good therapist will work intuitively and should be able to feel where there are problem areas and adapt the therapy accordingly. Most treatments last between 45 minutes to an hour.
Experiencing Reiki for the first can be an emotional experience as sometimes spontaneous releases of trapped emotions can occur. This does not always happen and sometimes the recipient can simply fall into a deep sleep and remember very little of the actual treatment. Everyone reacts differently but most feel a deep sense of peace and relaxation after receiving a Reiki treatment.
Practicing Reiki can be a catalyst to a Kundalini Awakening if the individual concerned practices intensely. Once a person has been attuned to Reiki there isn't a way to be un-attuned so again please do your own research before undertaking any Reiki course so to be fully aware of what you are undertaking.
Reiki is amazing but you get out of it what you put into it. The more intensely you practice the more powerful the energy becomes. If you combine it with other spiritual practices then it can be truly trans-formative and evolutionary.
